The Radius of Pi
Currently in Development
The Radius of Pi follows Garrett Walker and his younger sister, Pi, as they grow up in a troubled home during the Great Depression. Their father, Jarrett Walker, rules the house through anger and drinking, and the children learn early how to stay quiet and watch for danger. Garrett is protective and careful. Pi trusts him completely. Their bond is deep, even when little is spoken between them.
One stormy night, after Jarrett's anger turns dangerous again, the children run from the house searching for safety. In the storm, lightning strikes nearby, and both children collapse. When Garrett wakes and cannot wake Pi, he believes she has died. Shocked and terrified, he leaves, carrying that belief with him for years.
But Pi survives.
Neighbors find her and take her home, only to discover the farmhouse has burned and both parents are dead. With no sign of Garrett, Pi comes to believe he returned to the house for help and died in the fire alongside their parents. Each child grows up believing the other is gone forever.
Pi is later taken in by a kind Christian family. As she grows older, she begins going by the name Elizabeth, partly in memory of her mother, Elly, and partly as a way of stepping into a new life without forgetting the old one. She builds a steady life through hard work, education, and quiet faith. Garrett survives on the streets for years before a professor notices his intelligence and gives him a chance at a different future. Though Garrett succeeds in school, he cannot escape the guilt and grief he carries inside.
Years later, without knowing it, both Garrett and Elizabeth arrive at the same college.
At first, they pass each other like strangers. But Garrett begins to notice things he cannot explain. Then one day, he sees a scar above Elizabeth's ankle and suddenly remembers the storm. Later, he speaks the name "Pi" aloud before he can stop himself. The name changes everything.
Their reunion is not simple or easy. Too much time has passed, and both have become different people. Slowly, they begin learning how to know one another again. Just as they start rebuilding their relationship, Garrett is drafted into World War II.
The two stay connected through letters during the war, but one day the letters stop coming. For months, Elizabeth hears nothing and fears the worst once again. Then, in 1945, Garrett finally returns home, injured and changed by war.
The Radius of Pi is a story about loss, identity, endurance, and the lasting bond between siblings. It explores how people carry love and grief through time, and how hope can survive even after years of separation.
